Beyond the Stereotypes (and the Kimonos)

What is Beyond Kimono? If you Google “Japan,” you’ll get millions of photos of cherry blossoms, neon signs in Shinjuku, and—of course—beautiful kimonos. But as much as we love a good seasonal latte and a traditional robe, there is a whole world of “Modern Japan” that gets lost in translation.

Beyond Kimono is a digital corner dedicated to exploring the quirks, the culture, and the “Wait, really?” moments of Japanese life. We’re here to talk about the things you won’t find in a standard tourist brochure—from why 7-Eleven is a national treasure to the reality of being a “typical” (or not-so-typical) Japanese person in 2025.

Who’s Behind This Blog?

Hi! We are not your guide—We are your slightly confused, overly curious sidekicks with a sketchbook and a knack for noticing the tiny things that make Japan both magical and mildly baffling.

Beyond Kimono is powered by Rieko — a curious Osakan with a sketchbook and a soft spot for life’s cultural plot twists — with a dash of humor from her husband, Suzu, who never misses a chance to call out the weirdly wonderful.

Together, they share playful observations, offbeat insights, and glimpses of everyday Japan that most people walk right past.
